Sadly, since December of 2024, my mental heath has worsened greatly from an ongoing gagging outside odor that has been leaching into my home from late evenings to early mornings; randomly on weekends. I've lived hear 8 years and have never smelled offensive odors at my house. I've investigated and documented to source of this terribel odor to the new extension of the Heart of Florida Environmental landfill, which is located two miles east of my home. Fellow residents of Lake Panasoffkee Florida and surrounding areas have routinely complained to officials about their related health issues and quality of life concerns. No immediate efforts by Sumter County Florida officials, Sumter County Sheriff's office or other regional government offices have resulted in an internal investigation, charges filed or odor eliminated as of July 14, 2025. Even after the landfill was cited with odor issues in May 2025, officials are allowing the landfill to continue operating and cause added health and quality of life issues to everyone for 30 more days. There are too many complaints to list here. Sumter County officials have failed to immediate protect us from harm. Instead, deferring blame on a city in its jurisdiction without taking immediate steps to act upon and immediate follow-through with actions that would promptly stop this harmful odor. County's actions against our community are highly negligent, dangerous, unethical, unconstitutional and extremely harmful. I estimate that over 13,000 residents have been negatively affected by the noxious odor and our county's lack of direct action.
